Manaikalani Film 2012 / School is Cool

In Term 2 we were learning a lot about movie magic, and how movies can influence our world. We created many movies. We started by brainstorming key messages we could include in our movies. 

We also made a movie that explains how to plant kumara. It was really fun to do. We created this movie to inspire people to learn how to grow their own kumara.


Our movie for The Manaiakalani Film Festival is called 'School Is Cool'. We made it to share all of the cool learning and fun that we have at school.

Our movie was also shown at the Tamaki Primary Academy Awards. We created a PMI about Movie Magic and shared what we liked, what was challenging and interesting.

My Explanation about how Electricity travels.

            Have you ever wondered how electricity travels ?


We need electricity to cook food, freeze meat and to clean.

Did you know electricity starts  in a power station and in the power station there is a generator. The generator is a machine that creates electricity.The generator is powered from different forms of energy like wind, water or coal.


From there, it goes to the distribution lines which carry the electricity to a substation. Then the power lines carries it to our homes where we use it to power our lights and more.

Whanau Kai Garden Day

Yesterday was Whanau Day and it was about celebrating our Kai Garden.

There was also groups of kids telling the parents and students about what we have learnt this year
 they were Timotimo, Ko, Kete baskets and many more.

A kai garden is a garden where you only grow veggies.

I have learnt that this topic is about plants and different types of energy and photosynthesis.

What I liked about this topic was that we got to do projects and planting.


My role in the community is making sure the environment clean and green. Keeping it nice so it doesn’t become ugly.

At school I can be sustainable by throwing rubbish in the bin, putting fruit scraps in the worm farm.

To be  sustainable at home I need to throw my recycling in the bin.Take the trash to the bin instead of just throwing it on the ground. Cleaning my property.

We think that this is an important charity as the money will help kids like  Charday in our class who is partially deaf.

Simple Fractions

The Last Fruit Bowl

                
One sunny bright day in the Cook Islands there were two kind and generous kids named Chris and Mary. They were best friends. People sometimes thought Chris was Mary because they always wore the same things, but just so you know chris is a girl. They were at the beach on a hot blazing sunny day then Mary said to Chris “ Oi go grab us a drink and some fruit ” then chris replied “ Ok”. Mary said “ She was the boss of Chris ” and Chris replied “ No you’re not the boss of me ” when he got her stuff.

When she got there they had no fruit left not even a crumb he walked back and told Mary “there was no more fruit left” she had thought that Chris was lying to her so she said “ I’ll go look myself then you liar” so she had seen that she wasn’t lying so they packed there stuff and went to the markets. when they got there they went in and looked around the market all there was were fish, pig, chicken and they hated fish, chicken and pig. they searched everywhere for fruit then Chris remembered a secret her dad told her. Then she told Mary that there was a secret bowl of fruit.  Then Mary said “ Lets go search for it then where is it”  Chris replied “ Um I think it’s in the jungle”. After she had told her about the fruit bowl they started talking about what they were going to do then Chris had an idea and told Mary “ We will sneak out of our house when our family is asleep ok” Mary replied “ yep I got it ”. Then they had only one place to go and meet at it was  the beach they up. The next day Chris’s parents had woken up and went into her bedroom to wake her up for school when they got into her room she wasn’t in there at all so they thought she went to Mary’s because they always walk together when they go to school. Then mary’s parents went into her room and said mary get up for school now but she didn’t wake up so they went over to her bed and she was gone so they thought that she was already gone with Chris. So the two families met up and talked about how wonderful there kids are at school and at home after they had finished talking Mary’s parents said “ it is so wonderful for your daughter to walk mary to school because there such cutest friends” .“WHAT” said Chris’s parents I thought mary picked up Chris “no she didn’t though”. After that conversation they wondered where there kids were they went to their school and asked there teacher if she had seen them come to school this morning the teacher said “no I haven’t seen them since last friday why what's the matter”. “Well our children are missing and we need to find them now” then the parents got really upset about where there children were and if they were okay. They were gone for days the parents started to get upset. Meanwhile the kids where searching for the fruit bowl then they came across an old abandoned fale they had nowhere to sleep so they went inside and found two lavalavas so they slept in them and used them as blankets then Mary woke up and got Chris and told her “what if our parents will miss us plus i’m so hungry and this place gives me the creeps”.
The next day they had set off and walked passed some bushes there was a pathway they walked back and there sitting on a huge rock was the biggest fruit bowl they had ever seen it would have to take two people to carry it they were gleaming at it with there bulging eyes . Then Mary walked closer  then Chris grabbed her by the arm and said “ something doesn’t  feel right ” then she looked for a rock then she found  a rock and threw it over then there where two  guards they where skeletons they looked like they where puppets and they had swords like pirates.The only way they  could get past  them was either to kill them our sneak past and Mary was a little freaked out but what they did was sneak past was from. Sneaking from the back they got the fruit and replaced it with some rocks and an old coconut shell then traveled  back  home and they celebrated and they planted the fruit seeds and the parents where so grateful to be reunited they lived with heaps of fruit they where all delighted to have fruit again.

Positives

What did you like about this term’s unit?
  • Using a camera.  
  • Having the opportunity to edit a movie. Some of us are now confident to edit a movie and are now going to be helping our teacher edit T.P.S News.

  • Working as a group to plan our movies.  
  • This unit helped us build stronger relationships with each other especially when we were working as a group to produce and edit our movies.  
  • Speeches! - doing and preparing a speech helped developed our presenting skills. 
  • We have become confident in sharing our ideas without being shy. 
  • Learning about movie making equipment like the tripod, imove programme, flip cam etc.  
  • Enjoyed learning about the movie making process - brainstorming, planning, script writing, storyboarding, filming, editing, presenting.  
  • Learning about the different effective camera shots.  
  • MAKING A MOVIE! 
  • Everyone in our class was in a movie.
  • Finishing the movie off with a whole school Academy awards. This made us feel very proud of our hardwork! We felt like REAL professional film makers.
  • Our whanau and friends being proud of us - they really appreciated our movies.
  • We have definitely expanded our knowledge about movie making and have developed good movie making skills that we want to share with others. We look forward to continuing our Movie Magic journey and learning more fun ways to extend our movie making skills.

What challenges did you have with this unit? 
  • Waiting for our turn to film because there was only one flip-cam and a tripod.  
  • We had some groups using the same filming location so we had to wait for them to finish filming and sometimes it ment we couldn't film because they were taking too long. For example the staff room, corridor, reading room etc.
  • We couldn’t film sometimes as some students were away and the weather was not too good as well.  
  • Memorising our lines for our scripts. 
Interesting
What interested you about this unit?
  • The editing process.  
  • Adding sound effects and music to our movies.

Spooky Halloween Nights

                                          Spooky Halloween Nights 
Orientation:
 One day in America two best friends lived in a big city named HollyWood. Sophie and Nikki loved Halloween and always played together they did everything like play and do each others makeup and if Nikki was upset Sophie would cheer her up by doing funny faces and being silly and tomorrow was Halloween they were so excited and they always went together when trick - or - treating . The next day was Halloween Sophie yelled at nikki “ It’s Halloween get up already nikki ”. Sophie and Nikki always did everything together.
Problem :
They got dressed and headed off they came past this weird looking house then Nikki said “hey let’s go check that place out Sophie !” Sophie replied “ sure then but don’t forget this was your idea”. Nikki replied “ yeah yeah whatever now come on !”. When they got to the house they knocked on the door and then a weird looking man appeared at the door and said “ what do you want ” he looked as if he was in a bad mood and then Nikki said “ uh why do you think were here ! ” not soon after she said that the man said in a very cross voice I will kill you in your sleep then Sophie and Nikki ran all the way home with terror.
 Solution:
 After that terrible Halloween night they had told their parents about everything and they rang the police and told what street what house and the police had told the two friends that they were safe and that they caught a criminal and murderer and their parents were relieved those two little friends were safe .

  Orientation:
One day in America two best friends lived in a big city named HollyWood there names were  sophie and Nikki they had loved  halloween and tomorrow was halloween they were so excited  and they always went together when trick - or - treating . The next day was halloween Sophie yelled at nikki “ It’s halloween get up already nikki ”.

They got dressed and headed off they came past this weird looking house  and then Nikki said “hey let’s  go check that place out  Sophie !”  
Sophie replied “ sure then but don’t forget this was your idea”.  
Nikki replied “ yeah yeah whatever now come on”. When they got to the house they knocked on the door and then a weird looking man appeared at the door  and said  “ what  do  you want ” he looked as if he was in a bad  mood and then Nikki said “ uh why do you think were here ! ”  
not soon after she said that the man said in a very cross voice  I will kill you in your sleep.

Solution:
